The history of this sacred image begins with its discovery in Kazan, revealed to a nine-year-old girl through apparitions of the Virgin, who indicated the hiding place of the icon buried by Christians during the Tartar occupation. In 1612, in the context of the battle to free Moscow from Polish rule, Kusma Minin and Prince Dimitri carried a copy of this icon onto the battlefield, relying on its protective power. The credit for the liberation of Moscow was attributed to the Mother of God of Kazan, elevating the icon to a symbol of protection for the Romanov dynasty and one of Russia's greatest spiritual treasures. The increasing importance of the icon over the centuries led to the construction of the Kazan Cathedral on the famous Nevsky Prospect at the beginning of the 19th century.
