This icon portrays a miraculous event. In 716, John Damascene was wrongly accused before the caliph and punished by having his right hand cut off. The hand was to be displayed in the city square as a warning. John prayed fervently to the Mother of God, who appeared to him and said, "You are healed. Now work well with your hand" and the hand was restored. To show his gratitude to God, John composed a famous hymn in His honour and placed a silver hand under the icon.
