Russian painted icon on antique wood panel, Descent into hell, 12x11 in.

This icon, painted in modern times on an antique wood panel, depicts 13 differente scenes. At the centre, we see the descent of Jesus into hell, a crucial moment of the Passion. Christ opens the gates of Hell, having the power to free anyone there.

Surrounding the central scene are twelve key moments in the life of Jesus and Mary, namely the Twelve Great Orthodox Feasts.
