Twelve Great Feasts, restored Russian icon painted by hand on wood, 12x10 in. From the XVIII century onwards, particularly in Russia, iconographic schemes have been developed that unify the twelve main liturgical festivities in a single work of art, centering the composition around the Easter celebration. These icons are particularly significant and are prominently displayed in churches, in the front row of the iconostasis, serving as a form of continuous liturgical and biblical catechesis for the faithful. The central scene of these compositions emphasises various theological and biblical aspects of Easter, including Christ's descent into hell, the procession of the blessed to paradise, observed by the good thief at the gates of paradise, Christ's Resurrection from the tomb, and his appearance at the Sea of Galilee. This visual representation serves not only as an object of devotion, but also as an educational tool to deepen understanding of the festivities and their meanings. The Resurrection of Christ is depicted in the centre of the painting, while the four Evangelists are portrayed on each corner. Subjects: The Twelve Great Feasts of the liturgical year. Origin: Moscow, Russia. Material: wood, levkas. Technique: egg tempera. Measurements: 12.2x10.2 in. Era: 19th century, restored in the 20th century. The icon comes with an expert appraisal and an elegant velvet case.
