Icon of the Virgin Hodegetria, Romania, antique finish, 12.2x9.1 in.
Hand-painted by expert Romanian artists in the tradition of the Byzantine school, this icon is attributed to the brush of the evangelist Luke.
This iconographic type was named Hodegetria, which means "she who shows the way", as the Virgin Mary is the guide and source of salvation for all believers.
Originally kept in Jerusalem, it was transferred to Constantinople in 1046 and later, in the 12th century, Prince Vladmir II Monomakh brought it to Smolensk, hence the name Smolenskaja. During the 1237 invasion of the Golden Horde, the icon became a symbol of protection, repelling the Mongol Tartars from the city walls.
Between the 19th and 20th centuries, it was relocated to Moscow, where it remained until its replacement with a copy placed in the 16th-century main church of Novodevichy Convent, now part of a museum.
The icon is delivered in an elegant box.
