Romanian hand-painted icon of the Mother of God of Tolga, antique effect, 12x10 in.
Hand-painted in tempera by Romanian iconographers following the Byzantine tradition, with applied gold leaf.
The Virgin inclines her head toward the Child Jesus, who draws close to his mother's face in an intimate, contemplative gesture; her hands are composedly arranged to support the Child. The background is gilded and bears inscriptions in Greek characters.
This icon is associated with the apparition reported on 8 August 1314 to the bishop of Rostov on the Volga, when an intense light and a column of fire revealed the presence of the suspended image, an event that led to the construction of a dedicated shrine.
Each icon is supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
The composition highlights the bond between mother and child through the proximity of their faces and the direction of their gazes; the gold leaf on the background and halos defines the pictorial space.
Executed on a wooden panel with an antique finish of 1-inch thick.
Actual measurements: 12.2x9.1x1 in.
