This icon is painted on a wooden panel following the Byzantine school of iconography. The image depicts the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, their faces close together in a gesture of deep tenderness typical of the Eastern iconographic tradition. Devotion to Our Lady of Good Counsel received a strong impulse during the pontificate of Leo XIII, who in 1884 officially approved the liturgical feast and the white scapular of Our Lady of Good Counsel, granting it indulgences. Since then the devotion has spread widely through the work of the Augustinians and the many pilgrims who over the centuries have visited the Sanctuary of Genazzano, carrying the image to many parts of the world.
The icon is distinguished by delicate yet intense colours that inspire recollection and spirituality. The halos of Mary and the Child contain symbols of devotional meaning.
