Romanian icon of Our Lady of Good Counsel, painted, green background, 12x10 in.
This icon is painted on a wooden panel following the Byzantine school of iconography. The painting depicts the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus, their faces close together in a gesture of deep tenderness and protection, typical of the Eastern iconographic tradition. The green background emphasises the figures of Mother and Child, while the painting is enhanced by a painted, aged-style frame with gold touches that add luminosity and highlight the sacred representation.
Devotion to Our Lady of Good Counsel experienced notable development during the pontificate of Pope Leo XIII, who in 1884 officially approved the liturgical feast and the white scapular of Mater Boni Consilii, granted with indulgences. The icon is closely linked to the Sanctuary of Genazzano and its diffusion throughout the world was promoted by the Augustinians and by generations of pilgrims who carried the image as a sign of devotion.
The icon is delivered in an elegant red presentation case, designed to protect it during transport and storage. A certificate of authenticity, signed by the iconographer and accompanied by a brief note on the icon’s origin and meaning, is affixed to the back.
