This icon depicts the Crucifixion of Christ, hand-painted in tempera by Romanian iconographers trained in the Byzantine tradition, with a background and halos rendered in gold leaf, measuring 12.2x9.1 in.
At the centre the crucified Christ is pictured with his head bowed and his body stretched out, whilst on either side stand the Virgin Mary and Saint John in an attitude of participation and contemplation, wearing robes in contrasting colours with defined folds, against a golden background. The inscriptions in Greek identify the figures according to Eastern iconography.
The craftsmanship follows traditional methods, with tempera painting and the construction of the image through chromatic fields and highlights, whilst the application of gold leaf contributes to the definition of the symbolic space and the liturgical interpretation of the scene; each icon comes with a certificate of authenticity.
