This triptych is a sacred artwork featuring at its centre the icon of Our Lady of the Sign, a traditional depiction where the Virgin Mary, with her hands open in a gesture of blessing, carries in the centre of her chest a circular image of the Lord, symbolising the divine incarnation as described by the prophet Isaiah: The Virgin will conceive and bear a son who will be called Emmanuel.
On the sides of the Madonna, the figures of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel are portrayed in the guise of two angels, adding an additional layer of meaning and beauty to the central panel. The two side panels complete the triptych with images of the Mother of God, dressed in green with a purple mantle, and of Saint Nicholas the Bishop, depicted in solemn attire while blessing the people with one hand and holding the Holy Scriptures with the other. The edges of these panels are lightly decorated with wavy patterns, visually enriching the whole.
