The icon "Our Lady of Help to the Dead" represents the final refuge for those near death.
This name has been adopted by the Russian people since time immemorial, referring to various miraculous icons through which the Blessed Virgin has shown her mercy to those already crossing the threshold of death.
In the mid-17th century, on Epiphany Day, the devout peasant Fedot Obukhov was stuck in a snowstorm. His horses were tired, and he lay down on the sled, drifting off to sleep.
Yet he found the strength to cry out for help to the Queen of Heaven, promising to create the icon "The Recovery of the Lost" for his parish church.
His prayer was answered. A villager from a nearby village found him half-frozen and saved him.
After recovering, he fulfilled his vow.
In the icon, the Mother of God inclines her head slightly to the left, supporting the Child and clasping her hands, while the Child presses his face against the Mother's and holds her neck with his hand.
