Life-Giving Font, Russian modern icon, hand-painted, 12x10 in.

This icon, known as the Life-Giving Font, is crafted by skilled iconographers on wood and is characterised by the use of vibrant yet elegant colours. The image depicts the legend of the Holy Theotokos, showcasing the miracle that took place in the fifth century near Constantinople. The warrior Leo Marcello, future emperor, following divine guidance, discovers a hidden spring and uses its mud to anoint the eyes of a blind man who miraculously regains his sight. This event foreshadows the prediction of his rise to the throne, as prophesied by the voice of the Mother of God.

Seven years after the event, Leo has a temple built around the spring, restoring the place of worship and dedicating it to the Theotokos. The icon, deeply revered even in the Sarov desert in Russia, has been a source of healing for many pilgrims directed by the saint Seraphim of Sarov. On the Friday of the bright week, after the liturgy in Orthodox churches, a prayer service is usually held in front of the Mother of God icon. Believers sprinkle their gardens and orchards with the water blessed during this prayer service, invoking the Lord's and His purest Mother's help for the harvest.
