The history of the Russian icon Mother of God of the Three Hands dates back to 1716, when the Church Doctor John Damascene was unjustly accused by the Caliph of Damascus, leading to the amputation of his hand. A devotional legend quickly spread about this hand amputation incident, claiming that John offered the severed hand to an image of the Holy Virgin. According to the legend, the Virgin's hand emerged from the icon and reattached the injured limb. John then applied a silver votive hand to the icon, giving rise to the icon of the Theotokos of the Three Hands.
