This modern icon is a faithful reproduction of one of the most famous types of depiction of the Mother of God of the Three Hands of the 15th century. This icon takes its name from legend about Saint John Damascene whose hand was cut off on Lion III's orders, punishing him for defending the religious images. The Saint prayed the icon so hard that a new hand appeared on his injured arm and, to thank the Mother of God, he added a third silver hand to the Theotokos icon as an ex-voto.
