The icon of the Virgin of Vladimir is a national sacred subject. It was brought from Constantinople to Visegrad, near Kiev, and then moved to Vladimir in 1155 by prince Andrey Bogolyubsky. He carried the icon through his battles for protection. In 1395, when Moscow was in danger of being attacked by Timur, the icon was brought to the capital and the enemy retreated. After coming back to Vladimir, it was moved again to Moscow in 1480. From 1918 to 1930 it was kept in the State Historical Museum, then in 1930 is was moved to the National Gallery. This icon type was very popular as a theme for Russian icon painting up until the beginning of the XV century.
