Russian painted icon of the Mother of God of Tolga, 5.5x3.9 inches. The icon of the Mother of God of Tolga appeared on the 8th of August, 1314, to the bishop of Rostov. He was visiting his eparchy and decided to stop at night by the right bank of the river Volga for praying. At midnight, he saw something glowing.
The glow came from a pillar of fire on the other bank of the river. He then took his crozier and crossed a bridge to get closer. On the top of the pillar of fire, he saw an icon of the Mother of God. Astonished by this vision, he prayed at length and then went back to the other side of the river, forgetting his crozier.
The next morning, when he was ready to leave, he couldn't find his staff, but, after he remembered his vision, he sent someone to check by the river and the crozier was found by an icon in the woods.
So the bishop decided to build a church in that spot and the icon is celebrated on August 8th.
This icon is a faithful reproduction of the original of the 15th century, painted by hand on linden wood covered in gold leaf.
The painting is delivered in an elegant wooden box.
