Russian wooden egg, Yaroslavl Mother of God, 10 in. Russian wooden egg painted by hand with the icon of the Mother of God of Yaroslavl, originally painted in the 13th century.
The peculiarity of this wooden egg is its Russian doll-type design: a bigger egg shell, cut in half, contains the smaller whole painted egg and frames its icon thanks to three cut-out portions. These openings are carved in the inlaid golden representation of an Orthodox church entry, like three arches with a small cross on the bottom. On top of the alcove, two angels and Jesus' face are painted with golden halos.
The icon depicted on the whole egg represents the Mother of God of Yaroslavl, an exemple of the Eleousa iconographic type, where the Theotokos and the Infant Jesus are closed to each other, cheek to cheek, and the Infant touches his mother face with affection. Two Saints in adoration stand on both sides of the Theotokos.
The two eggs are painted by hand by experienced Russian painters, specialised in freehand painting of the School of Miniature, the ancient Russian art developed as an evolution of the Byzantine iconographic painting during the time of Imperial Russia.
The halos are made with gold leaf and hand-painted details on it, making each piece unique and precious.
Measures of the outer egg: 9.06x4.33 inches.
Measures of the inner egg: 7.28x5.14 inches.
