Wooden Russian doll, Umilenie Mother of God, 12 in. Matryoshka doll made of wood and painted by hand, characterised by 5 full painted Russian dolls and 5 cut-out dolls creating alcoves for the smaller painted dolls and framing their icons.
The biggest alcove represents the entry of an Orthodox church with a small cross on the bottom and an inlaid arch. On the top of the alcove, two angels and Jesus' face are depicted with golden halos.
The first full painted doll represents the Mother of God called Umilenie, a Russian word meaning "Tenderness", indicating an icon where the Theotokos hugs the Infant Jesus with love and affection. Two Saints stand by her sides and the three figures are perfectly framed by the arches cut-out in the first alcove.
The second alcove is depicted with the same inlaid image of the Orthodox church, but with one simple opening, showing the Christ Pantocrator with closed book painted on the smaller doll.
The third painted doll represents Saint Nicolas, while the fourth and the fifth Saint John and Saint Michael, all three framed by the opening in the alcove containing them.
All dolls are painted by hand by experienced Russian painters, specialised in freehand painting of the School of Miniature, the ancient Russian art developed as an evolution of the Byzantine iconographic painting during the time of Imperial Russia.
The halos are made with gold leaf and hand-painted details on it, making each piece unique and precious.
