Saint Roch, who lived in 14th-century in France, is known as a protector against epidemics. He renounced his family's wealth to care for the sick and poor. While on a pilgrimage in Italy, he fell ill with the plague and secluded himself in a forest, where, as tradition holds, a dog brought him bread until his recovery. After his death, devotion to him spread widely, especially during times of epidemics.
