In his left hand, the saint holds a shell, symbol of the baptism, and a cross with a white band evoking his role of Christ's forerunner. His right hand is raised in a blessing gesture. A small lamb lies by his feet, symbolising innocence and John's definition of Jesus as Lamb of God.
