Lent: A Time of Preparation and Reflection

Lent is a forty-day period preceding the Resurrection Easter, a time of spiritual reflection, prayer, and penance in preparation for the Easter mystery. The Church invites the faithful to live this journey with acts of conversion such as fasting, almsgiving, and prayer, to approach the celebration of Christ's victory over death with a pure heart.

In churches and homes, the Lenten period is also reflected in the liturgical environment, characterized by the use of purple vestments, the color of penance, and sober Lenten decorations evoking silence and meditation. During this period, many faithful intensify prayer through the practice of the Stations of the Cross, an ancient rite retracing the steps of Christ's Passion. It is customary to display paintings or bas-reliefs of the Stations of the Cross in churches and places of worship.

In the journey towards Easter, the most significant liturgical moments are represented by Ash Wednesday, where the faithful receive ashes as a sign of humility and conversion, and by Holy Week, culminating in the Triduum Paschale with the commemoration of Christ's Passion, Death, and Resurrection. To accompany the spirituality of these days, Easter crucifixes, votive candles, and liturgical incense are used as symbols of faith and contemplation.

Resurrection Easter: The Joy of Victory over Death

Easter is the core of Christian faith, the most important feast of the liturgical year, celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and His victory over death. This day marks the beginning of a time of joy and spiritual renewal, where the liturgy is adorned with light and festivity, replacing the penitential color of Lent with white and gold, symbols of glory and triumph.

During the Easter Vigil, the Paschal Candle is lit, representing the light of the Risen Christ and remains lit in churches throughout the Easter season until Pentecost. Even in the homes of the faithful, Easter is accompanied by symbols and traditions such as Resurrection icons, sacred artwork, Easter crucifixes, and blessed candles, which are lit as a sign of hope and new life.

In addition to liturgical elements, the Easter tradition is also manifested through local customs related to the holiday, such as processions and sacred representations of the Passion and Resurrection of Christ. Another important aspect is the Easter banquet, bringing families together in a moment of celebration and sharing, enriched with symbolic dishes like bread, wine, and lamb.

When to Set Up the Easter Sepulcher

Less known than the Nativity scene, the Easter sepulcher is a tradition that is experiencing renewed interest in some regions. It is a scenic representation depicting the moments of Christ's Passion, Death, and Resurrection, often set up with figurines and settings that reproduce Gethsemane, Calvary, and the empty Tomb.

Unlike the Christmas Nativity scene, which is prepared during Advent, the Easter sepulcher begins to take shape from Palm Sunday, when the first scenes of the Passion can be included. During Good Friday, the Crucifixion and Deposition in the tomb are added, while the scene of the Resurrection is completed on the night between Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday, thus celebrating the triumph of life over death.

This tradition, widespread in some Christian communities, is a suggestive way to experience the Easter mystery more intensely and transmit the meaning of the Resurrection even to the youngest, through a visual and engaging representation.
