Since the 9th century, the fixed ecclesiastical calendar has been universally-accepted, providing regular commemorations of saints and helping to disseminate their iconography. By the end of the 10th century, menological icons with a saint for each day were completed and became a typical painting in Russia. In the menological icon for a full year, the sequence of the different months follows the orthodoxe religious calendar, which starts, following an older tradition, in september with the beginning of Jesus' public preaching.
