In 453, the painting was brought by the Emperor Leo I from Jerusalem to Constantinople. In 898, it was given to Prince Vladimir, that move it to Kiev. Vladimir had fought in Crimea to attain by force the hand of Princess Anna. When Vladimir evangelise the North of Russia, he put the icon in the church of Saint Sophia.
Then Ivan seized the icon to hook it on a pillar in Moscow.
In 1812, the painting was taken by the French army as spoils of war.
